Early Epoch – #3: 28/10/2020 – Stumbling Through The Unproductive Periods

So I basically haven’t written anything this week, which is why this is three days late.

The one thing I have done, I’ll get out of the way first; after watching a few Bellular videos on the lore of World of Warcraft and how it’s been developed over recent years, I am more confident and content than ever in having the Archivist unreliably record history. The character isn’t supposed to be a be-all and end-all for the lore of the world, although that was my original intent for them; now, I have fallen in love with the idea of having them act as an agent of confusion, perhaps maliciously or perhaps innocently spreading a version of history that will slowly, over the course of content and narrative being explored, turn out to be inaccurate.

I seem to be in a period of consuming media and content right now – essentially the video-game writer’s equivalent of field research or reading up on my market. I’ve fallen hard into leveling characters on World of Warcraft, which is spawning no end of head canons and side-characters that may one day get translated into Epoch, and alongside that I’m watching loads of breakdowns of different narrative design theories for different games and films.

Overall, though, I am also focusing a lot on non-Epoch university work, my own private life and the demands of just living life at the moment, mid-Covid lockdown. (that’s going to age this blog nicely) It’s the reality of being a third-year student whilst trying to get a project like this organised into something readable and usable and I need to embrace it; this blog will persist, even in short weekly updates like this.

I have the framework of race, organisation and character profiles that use the same framework to organise and categorise those different peoples within the world. I think I’m going to try and get some of those written up this coming week, and hopefully publish at least one of them on this site. (obviously with the caveat that everything, as always, is a work in progress)

Thanks for reading this short little thing, stay safe out there.

Thom.
